About
One of my favourite quotes is by Helen Keller: 'life is either a daring adventure, or nothing at all'. It resonates with me because she so eloquently highlights the difference between 'living' and 'existing', between living with purpose / taking life on, as opposed to just surviving. It's a chasm actually.
Finding my way back to photography took a circuitous route. After initially picking up a camera in my teens, I took a couple of detours; I studied science, then property economics and ended up working as a property valuer, only to discover that I needed a more creative way to spend my time (!).
So shooting for me is more than just a fun thing to do, although it is that, now I feel compelled to shoot. I'm drawn to dramatic scenes with strong contrast, vibrant colours or a sense of mystery. I guess I'm trying to grab the viewer's attention for long enough to pose a couple of questions, like: Is this all there really is? Am I living a meaningful life?
I try to remind myself, and others, that life is a fragile gift, there is beauty all around us, and that we can make a difference if we try. Hopefully my images will intrigue, inspire and prompt a sense of introspection so that we do just that.
